So clearly I’ve been stockpiling a few artists to post for the last few weeks as I’ve been busy on the yurt but Ann Weber is one that really complements that work too! Ann Weber works in cardboard — after years of working in ceramics she decided to built huge pieces out of cardboard as it was more portable and easier to manipulate.
Seriously, those are cardboard. When I look at some of the pieces in their close up pictures it looks almost like she takes the approach of shingling the cardboard in to shapes over an armiture of sorts.
Her pieces are pretty amorphous in nature and some top 16 feet. I like that she uses bardboard like barrel strapping in some instances. The basketweave like texture on the above is really amazing too. She says in her artist’s statement that they are sometimes representational of seed pods, sometimes they’re relationships, etc. That people can bring their own interpretations to what she creates.
In time she began casting her works in bronze, the cardboard pieces themselves — how wonderful is that. You can see the lines and strapping as well as the staple marks. Clearly I’m into the multiple uses of staples these days! Her bronze works, which are still quite large, are generally public installations, they’d look great in the meadow in NH!
I like the idea of finding balance in a naturally unstable material — the shellack she covers the cardboard in give is the rigidity it needs not to decompose the way you would think cardboard would in time.
